PiBoIdMo Day #1: When Night Took a Vacation

It's day #1 of PiBoIdMo, and so far, so good! I came up with a picture book idea and turned it into a complete 569 word first draft.

The idea was inspired by this blog post by Joan Holub that suggested tweaking an existing title as a starting point for something of your own. The title I started with was "Goodnight Moon" and my tweak was "Goodnight Night", and it led to a story I'm calling, "When Night Took a Vacation."

Here's the opening of the story:
One morning, after Day said her usual “Good night” to Night and Night said his usual “Good morning” to Day, Night added, “By the way, you won’t be seeing me for a while.”
“Why?” cried Day. “Where are you going?”
“On vacation!” said Night. “I get so tired coming and going all the time. It’s always the same thing: You fade and I fall. I close and you break.”
“What will I do without you?” said Day, but Night was already gone.
On to day #2!
